I was pleased to join my 'sister', Tyrelady, on her great work collecting Climate Change Messages at the Geneva marathon leading up to 12th May. Almost 700 runners of all nationalities wrote Pledges about how they were going to make a difference to help our planet, particularly in terms of lowering carbon usage and waste. Tyrelady inspired everybody to put in effort for their beliefs by pulling a tyre along as she ran the marathon. A bold statement! I bicycled behind in support. A far easier feat!
We then spoke out the 1,000 Messages in front of the European United Nations headquarters. We had added the Messages from school children in Woolacombe, Devon and also the Nation Peace Messages collected previously from every nation on the planet for the Kilimanjaro Peace Climb. The flags of all nations stood behind in salute; for each and everyone of our nations on this planet must work together to find the solutions for Climate Change. Indeed maybe this will be the common ground which brings us all together...
We sent out the Messages beneath a statue of a broken chair. It symbolically spoke of the Earth systems that are breaking. We spoke for individuals taking on the responsibility of the healing - The power of the solutions in the hands of the people...
It can be done. Afterwards we started the low carbon journey home by cycling up and over the Jura mountains, wild camping in the forest, buying only food with no packaging... (I'd better not mention the 70 k/h head winds!)
